Agra News : This tusker elephant in Agra has completed 14 years of his freedom. He was rescued from a circus where he was given rigorous training to perform tricks, and was tortured for hours
Rajesh, a male elephant with long and royal tusks, was rescued from a circus in Uttar Pradesh in 2010. Forced to live with cruel training to perform tricks in the circus, today the male tusker has completed 14 years of his freedom at Wildlife SOS’s Elephant Sanctuary in Mathura, where he is enjoying a safe life.
Agra News : Forced to perform in the circus, watching elephant Rajesh play football standing on his hind legs was a great delight for the audience, unaware of the cruel training he had to undergo to perform all these tricks. He was tortured for hours, beaten with sticks and bull hooks to obey orders.
Agra News : The abuse that Rajesh had to endure as a performing elephant caused him severe mental distress. Despite being free from this painful life when Wildlife SOS successfully rescued and rehabilitated him, Rajesh initially displayed stereotypical behaviour and appeared scared and nervous. When the veterinary team approached him for treatment, he refused to rest and continued to fidget. He gradually calmed down after which the veterinary team started treating the wounds on his legs and gave him nutritious food to revive his lost strength.
Agra News : There has been a remarkable change in Rajesh’s temperament. He has become more gentle and calm and has built a bond of trust with his caretakers. Due to the change brought about by the veterinarians and staff caring for the elephants, Rajesh now has a healthy appetite and relishes fresh fruits and vegetables daily, including pumpkin, gourd, watermelon and raw bananas.

The elephant care staff ensures that they are always ready to attend to Rajesh’s needs. A healthy amount of fresh vegetables ensures Rajesh’s nutritious diet, which ensures he gets adequate nutrition.
Agra News : Baijuraj M.V., Director Conservation Projects, Wildlife SOS said, “Rajesh regularly gets his nails and footpads groomed. Nearly 15 years of effort to improve Rajesh’s condition has resulted in a remarkable improvement in his health. Seeing him lead a happy life under our care is one of the greatest joys we have experienced.
