The Government of India has taken a massive action against fake SIM cards which is being considered as a significant step to tackle cyber crime in India. The Government of India has reportedly deactivated more than 80 lakh SIM cards which were issued on fake documents. With the help of advanced AI tools, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) identified these fraudulent SIM cards and blocked them to prevent them from being used for illegal activities.

6.78 lakh numbers linked to cyber crime blocked

Apart from fake SIM cards, the government has also blocked 6.78 lakh mobile numbers that were directly involved in cyber crime activities. The action is being described as part of a comprehensive crackdown on digital fraud, demonstrating the government’s commitment to ensuring secure telecom services.

AI-powered action to identify fake numbers

The DoT used AI-based tools to detect mobile numbers registered with forged documents.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia further informed that the collaboration between the Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Home Affairs has been very important. It is worth mentioning that the Cyber ​​Crime Helpline 1930 has helped save Rs 3,500 crore of 10 lakh people by effectively resolving complaints.

TRAI’s new policies to tackle cyber crime

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced even stronger policies to curb cyber crime:

Message Traceability Rule: This rule, implemented on December 11, 2024, enables telecom operators to track the origin and chain of fake messages.

Blocking fraudulent calls and messages: From October 1, 2024, telecom operators started following strict guidelines to block telemarketing calls and messages at the network level.
